General Education Requirement

This is a correction, not an addition. Catalog Volume 39 lists the course prefixes ENG, MAT, GEN, PSY, and BUS in its index but publishes no general education requirement. An Associate of Applied Science is not awardable without one. The following is the requirement as it has been applied by the Registrar since 1988 and should have appeared in the Catalog.

Courses

ENG 121 — Composition I (3 cr.) Expository writing, source use, and revision. This is the course most frequently repeated at the College.

ENG 120 — Technical Communication (3 cr.) Documentation for the trades: work orders, inspection and condition reports, incident narratives, client-facing findings letters, and correspondence that may be produced in litigation. Required by every A.A.S. regardless of division. Prerequisite: ENG 121.

The Division of Anomalous Property and Nonstandard Conditions, the Division of Funerary and Interment Services, and the Division of Investigative and Protective Services each requested that ENG 120 be required rather than elective. It has been required since 2011.

MAT 104 — Applied Mathematics (3 cr.) Measurement, ratio and proportion, area and volume, rates, percent, basic trigonometry for layout, and unit conversion. MAT 104 does not transfer as a college algebra equivalent. Students intending to transfer to a four-year institution should take MAT 130 instead and should meet with an advisor in their first semester rather than their last.

MAT 130 — College Algebra (3 cr.) Offered fall and spring. Enrollment is typically under fifteen.

PSY 110 — Human Relations in the Workplace (3 cr.) Communication, conflict, supervision, team dynamics, and workplace expectations.

SOC 120 — Community and Work in the Ohio Valley (3 cr.) Regional economic and social history: extractive industry, agriculture, deindustrialization, and the labor market graduates are entering.

ETH 150 — Ethics for the Technical Professions (3 cr.) Professional obligation, conflict of interest, mandatory reporting, confidentiality, and the limits of a practitioner’s competence. Required rather than elective for Funeral Service Technology, Insurance Fraud Investigation, Private Investigation, and Anomalous Property Remediation.

GEN 101 — College and Career Success (1 cr.) Registration, financial aid, study method, campus resources, and job search. Taken in the first term.

Developmental education

Placement is by ACCUPLACER. Students placing below college level enroll in developmental coursework before the corresponding general education course.

• MAT 0910 — Mathematics Fundamentals (3 institutional credits)
• MAT 0920 — Pre-Algebra and Measurement (3 institutional credits)

Developmental courses do not carry credit toward any award. They are charged at the same per-credit-hour rate as credit-bearing courses, and they are included in the satisfactory academic progress calculation and in the attempted-hours limit for financial aid.

The College states this plainly because students are frequently surprised by it, and because being surprised by it late is expensive.

Corequisite placement is available in ENG 0910 for students within one band of the cutoff, allowing concurrent enrollment in ENG 121. The Registrar reports that corequisite completers pass ENG 121 at a higher rate than students who complete the developmental sequence first.

Program-designated general education hours are determined by the division and are stated in the program listing. Where a program lists a general education course not shown above, that course satisfies the requirement for that program as stated in the Catalog of record.
