Avian Deterrence Field Operations

Crop and facility bird deterrence using visual, auditory, and physical methods. Static deterrent placement and rotation schedules, propane cannon operation and municipal noise ordinance compliance, netting, and maintenance of human-form deterrent figures. Students document each figure's placement history and physical condition at the start and end of every session; this record is retained by the cooperating farm.
Instruction occurs primarily outdoors between 5:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. and is delivered on a working farm under a facilities use agreement. Hearing protection is required and is stocked by the Bookstore. Offered Fall term only.
Graduates
Class was at five in the morning on a working farm, which sorted people quickly. What stayed with me is the cannon log. You run the noise ordinance in your head before you run the cannon, or you get the farm sued.
