Bagpiping for Funeral and Civic Service

Highland bagpipe performance for funerals, memorial services, civic ceremonies, and public safety honors. Practice chanter fundamentals, transition to the full instrument, reed selection and maintenance, tuning of drones, and marching while playing.

Repertoire is limited to the service standard: Amazing Grace, Flowers of the Forest, Going Home, and two marches. Students requesting broader repertoire are directed to private instruction.

Includes graveside protocol developed with the Division of Funerary and Interment Services: positioning relative to the family, the distance at which a piper begins and ends, and the practice of walking away while still playing.

Students supply a practice chanter. A full instrument is not required until week nine. The College maintains two sets and will not represent that they are good.

Facilities and instruction

Instruction is delivered in the facilities of the Division of Performance and Guest Services. Additional photographs are collected at Campus photographs.
