Sleep Surface Evaluation
Short-Term Certificate · 160 clock hours · Division of Building, Structures and Site Services

This program is measured in clock hours, does not carry credit, and is not eligible for transfer.
Quality assurance testing of mattresses, foundations, and upholstered sleep products. Firmness measurement, edge support and roll-off testing, off-gassing evaluation, seam and tape edge inspection, and flammability standard verification under 16 CFR 1633.
Instruction is conducted in the Evaluation Bay, which is a testing environment. Attendance and alertness standards are published in the program handbook. BSS 220 meets on a modified schedule; individual session lengths vary by testing protocol and are posted at the start of each unit.
A small number of evaluation units used in BSS 215 and BSS 220 are contributed by regional manufacturers under a materials agreement. Units contributed under this agreement are used for destructive testing only and are not available for student use outside of scheduled instruction.
Graduates
It is a testing job, and the alertness standard in the handbook is not a joke — you cannot evaluate roll-off tired. The flammability verification is the one my company will let only a graduate sign.
