Tolliver House, 1968–1991

The Bellweather Vocational Institute operated a 44-bed residence at its former Ansel Street site. Tolliver House was constructed in 1968 with a state facilities grant and housed students in double rooms with shared bath. Meals were served in the Institute’s kitchen. A resident supervisor lived on the first floor.

Occupancy declined through the 1980s as the Institute’s enrollment shifted toward part-time and working students. Occupancy in the 1990–91 academic year was 19 of 44 beds. The Board of Trustees closed the facility at the conclusion of the spring 1991 term, citing occupancy and operating cost. The decision was not appealed.

The building was retained following closure and used for storage during the period preceding the College’s relocation to Corliss Pike. It was conveyed to Tolliver Township in 1993 and now houses a county human services office. The building’s residential fixtures were removed prior to conveyance.

Photographs of Tolliver House are held in the College archive and in the collection of the Tolliver County Historical Society. The archive does not maintain a complete record of furnishings or equipment removed during the 1993 preparation.
